| A wonderful way to understand the principles of ecology is through experiential (hands-on) learning. Despite having our classroom activities in the heart of downtown Miami, we are very fortunate to have a large number of parks and nature reserves within an hour's drive of Wolfson Campus.
The web page, Spending Time With Nature In South Florida, provides an overview of such sites. However, since I started teaching PCB 2033 in 1997, my classes have taken trips every Fall, Winter and Summer Term to Fairchild Tropical Garden, every Fall and Winter to Everglades National Park and every Summer to John Pennekamp State Coral Reef where my colleague, Dr. Tony Barros, and I combine Oceanography and Ecology classes into one highly social, but also educational outing. Other irregularly scheduled trips include Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary in Immokalee, biking the 15-mile Shark Valley Loop in Everglades National Park and doing field studies in the pine rocklands of Larry & Penny Thompson Park in West Perrine. These trips have been both educational and enjoyable for all of us as we got to know each other outside the classroom and share our love for the outdoors. An of course, PCB 2340C - Field Biology is a field study course that I taught in Costa Rica in 2003 and will hopefully teach again in the future. Students regularly report in their classroom feedback surveys that not only did participating in the fieldtrips help them learn material, but more importantly opened their eyes to South Florida's natural beauty. So, go to the PCB 2033 Fieldtrips Gallery for some photos from these trips. Students are also encouraged to attend the free monthly meetings of the Miami-Dade Chapter of the Florida Native Plant Society and the Tropical Audubon Society in order to connect classroom learning with current field research and conservation efforts. Optional writing assignments that summarize the main points of each meeting may be turned in for extra credit points. All photographs on this page including background are © Christopher P.
