NUR 2211L - Advanced Medical Surgical Nursing Clinical Laboratory

Course Description: This course provides students with opportunities to apply advanced concepts of medical surgical nursing. Experiences in both in-patient and community settings will be provided focusing on the nurse’s role in meeting the needs of the client, family, and community. Students will be encouraged to actively participate in projects assisting clients in preventive care and maintenance of health. (9 hour clinical lab)
Prerequisites: Pediatric Nursing, Pediatric Nursing Clinical Laboratory, Obstetric Nursing, Obstetric Nursing Clinical Laboratory, Psychiatric Nursing, Psychiatric Nursing Clinical Laboratory, Community Health Nursing, DEP 2000
Co requisites: Advanced Medical Surgical Nursing, Professional Nursing Leadership, SPC 1026
Course Competencies:
Competency 1: The Student will manage the care of clients with selected endocrine disorders by:
a. obtaining assessment data relevant to endocrine function
b. observing the characteristic clinical manifestations of hormone deficiencies or excesses
c. incorporating laboratory and diagnostic testing in the assessment and monitoring of clients
d. collaborating with the health care team in the management of clients with endocrine disorders including delegation of responsibility
e. applying the nursing process as a framework to provide individualized care to clients
.
Competency 2: The Student will manage the care of clients with selected neurologic disorders by:
a. assessing the effects of spinal cord injuries related to level of injury
b. incorporating appropriate diagnostic testing in the assessment of spinal cord injury, Myasthenia Gravis, Multiple Sclerosis, and Guillain Barre Syndrome
c. identifying clinical manifestations that are characteristic of degenerative neuromuscular disorders
d. collaborating with the health care team in the management of clients with spinal cord injury and degenerative neuromuscular disorders including delegation of responsibility
e. applying the nursing process as a framework to provide individualized care to clients
f. implementing a plan of care to meet the educational needs of clients and their families
g. observing services available to spinal cord injury clients in community agencies
Competency 3: The Student will manage the care of clients with selected hematologic disorders by:
a. obtaining assessment data relevant to hematologic function
b. incorporating appropriate diagnostic testing in the assessment of leukemia and anemia
c. identifying clinical manifestations that are characteristic of leukemia and anemia
d. collaborating with the health care team in the management of clients with hematologic disorders including delegation of responsibility
e. applying the nursing process as a framework to provide individualized care to clients
f. implementing a plan of care to meet the educational needs of clients and their families
g. observing services available to clients with hematologic disorders in community agencies
Competency 4: The Student will manage the care of clients with selected respiratory disorders by:
a. obtaining assessment data relevant to respiratory function
b. incorporating appropriate diagnostic testing in the assessment of pleural effusion,, lung cancer, adult respiratory distress syndrome, chest trauma, and pulmonary embolism
c. identifying clinical manifestations that are characteristic of respiratory disorders
d. collaborating with the health care team in the management of clients with respiratory disorders including delegation of responsibility
e. applying the nursing process as a framework to provide individualized care to clients
f. implementing a plan of care to meet the educational needs of clients and their families
g. observing services available to lung cancer clients at an outpatient cancer center
Competency 5: The Student will manage the care of clients with selected genitourinary disorders by:
a. obtaining assessment data relevant to genitourinary function
b. incorporating appropriate diagnostic testing in the assessment of renal failure, benign prostatic hypertrophy, and prostate cancer
c. identifying clinical manifestations that are characteristic of genitourinary disorders
d. collaborating with the health care team in the management of clients with genitourinary disorders including delegation of responsibility
e. applying the nursing process as a framework to provide individualized care to clients
f. implementing a plan of care to meet the educational needs of clients and their families
g. observing services available to clients with prostate cancer at an outpatient cancer center
h. observing services available to clients with renal failure
Competency 6: The Student will manage the care of clients with selected hepatic disorders by:
a. obtaining assessment data relevant to hepatic function
b. incorporating appropriate diagnostic testing in the assessment of cirrhosis, hepatitis, and pancreatitis
c. identifying clinical manifestations that are characteristic of hepatic disorders
d. collaborating with the health care team in the management of clients with hepatic disorders including delegation of responsibility
e. applying the nursing process as a framework to provide individualized care to clients
f. implementing a plan of care to meet the educational needs of clients and their families
Competency 7: The Student will manage the care of clients with burn injuries by:
a. developing a “safety” teaching plan for burn prevention in a community setting
b. identifying clinical manifestations that are characteristic of specific classification of burn injuries
c. collaborating with the health care team in the management of clients with burn injuries including delegation of responsibility
d. applying the nursing process as a framework to provide individualized care to clients
e. implementing a plan of care to meet the educational needs of clients and their families
