Nur 2810C - Professional Nursing Leadership

Course Description: This course provides the student with the theoretical and clinical knowledge necessary for actualization of the role of the registered professional nurse, with emphasis on delegation and supervision (1 hour lecture; 9 hour clinical lab).


                                                                                                              

Prerequisites:  Pediatric Nursing, Pediatric Nursing Clinical Laboratory, Obstetrical Nursing, Obstetrical Nursing Clinical Laboratory, Psychiatric Nursing, Psychiatric Nursing Clinical Laboratory, Community Health Nursing, DEP 2000

Co requisites: Advanced Medical Surgical Nursing, Advanced Medical Surgical Nursing Clinical Laboratory, SPC 1026        


                                                                                                            

Course Competencies:


Competency 1:        The Student will apply legal and professional principles essential to nursing practice by:
  1. summarizing the different laws that govern nursing practice
  2. analyzing the relationship between accountability and liability
  3. explaining how standards of care affect nursing practice

Competency 2: The Student will apply principles of leadership and management essential to nursing practice by:
  1. relating theories of  leadership and management  to nursing practice
  2. assisting other nursing personnel to develop skills in providing  nursing care
  3. utilizing modern technology to enhance efficiency of client care

Competency 3: The Student will apply principles of delegation and supervision essential to nursing practice by:
  1. identifying the clinical competencies of the members of the health care team
  2. establishing priorities for nursing care for a group of workers commensurate with their educational backgrounds
  3. assigning nursing personnel to client care based on level of expertise
  4. accepting accountability for nursing care delegated to other workers

Competency 4: The Student will practice within the ethical framework of nursing by:
  1. valuing cultural diversity in all individuals under their care
  2. analyzing selected ethical theories and principles
  3. using principles of ethics for resolving dilemmas in nursing practice

Competency 5: The Student will transition from the role of student to registered professional nurse by:
  1.   identifying strategies to ease their transition
  2. applying the nursing process as a framework for individualizing care for the client, family, significant others, and community
  3. demonstrating clinical competence when providing client care
  4. analyzing methods that increase public awareness of potential medical errors and ways of preventing them
  5.  making decisions and taking actions that are consistent with standards for nursing practice and licensing laws
