Behavioral Objective

 By the end of the lesson, the student will write the letter Z in upper case and lower case form. The student will be expected to properly form and write the letter Z in the upper case and lower case at least 5 times  out of 8 attempts on the provided primary lined paper.

By the end of the lesson, the student will make the sound of Z. On a teacher made worksheet the student will color at least three of four pictures that begin with the letter Z by saying the name of the picture.

By the end of the lesson, the student will accurately identify the letter Z from the vocabulary words during the lesson and a puzzle letter search from www.edhelper.com. The words are zoo, dizzy, pizza, bizarre, hazy,  buzzing, zooms, zebra, amazing, zigzags, zipped, fuzzy, zinnia, lazy, doze and sizes. The student will be expected  to identify  at least 4 of 5 letter Zs in the puzzle.

Details

 

Anticipatory Set

The teacher will place the letter Z all around the classroom, which will have been glued on and/or drawn on to bright color construction paper. The teacher will hang a self made "Z" door string decoration curtain at the door, so that the children have to come through it in order to come into the classroom at arrival time.

  1. The teacher will ask the students if they can identify the letter that is displayed around the classroom.
  2. The teacher will then ask the students if anyone can write the letter Z on the chalkboard or the dry erase board. 
  3. The teacher will then ask the students if anyone knows what sound the letter Z makes.

The teacher will show the "Amazing Z" video to the students.

Materials

 The materials that will be used within this lesson:

  • A computer - for uploading a video on the letter Z
  • A projector and screen - for showing the video on the letter Z
  • 40 sheets of newsprint paper with preprinted primary lines for each student
  • 20 pencils for each student
  • 20 copies of the Puzzle found on www.edhelper.com  for testing of the lesson 
  • 20 copies of teacher made worksheet with the pictures starting with the letter Z
  • chalkboard or dry erase board - to write the vocabulary words containing the letter Z that will be learnt during the lesson
  • white and red chalks or black and red dry erase markers to write voacabualary words containing letter Z on the chalkboard or dry erase board. Different colors needed to be able to differenciate the letter Z from the other colors.
  • Pictures of the Upper case and lower case Z - for placing around the classroom.
  • Bright color construction paper for displaying fo the letter z, by drawing the letter z on the paper or glueing a purchased pre-cut punched out letter z onto construction paper and for cutting out letter Zs for door curtain.
  • String to create a door curtain using letter zs
  • Tape for taping the letter Zs to the wall and for haning the door curtain
  • Scissors for cutting out the letter Zs
  • Glue for glueing the letter Zs onto the constrction paper.
  • Crayons

Input/procedure

  1.  Before the students are in class, the teacher will tape the letter Zs on the walls of the classroom and hang the Z door curtain onto the door frame. The teacher will also set up the projector so that it is ready to be played.
  2. The teacher welcome the students to the classroom.
  3. The teacher will ask the students if they can idenitify the letter that is being displayed around the classroom.
  4. The teacher will then ask the students if anyone can write the letter Z on the chalkboard or the dry erase board.  
  5. The teacher will then ask the students if anyone knows what sound the letter Z makes.
  6. The teacher will then show the video, the "Amazing Z" to the class, which is 2 minutes and 10 seconds long.
  7. The teacher will draw primary lines on the chalkboard or dryerase board so that it will look like the students paper.
  8. The teacher will write the letter z in uppercase and lowercase form on the chalkboard or dry erase board five times each on the primary lines, during which the students should be paying close attention to the teacher so that they will know how to hold the pencil correctly, because at this age they are still developing their fine motor skills.
  9. The teacher will show the students pictures on the projector, during which the teacher will say the name of the pictures while enunciating the sound of letter Z. 
  10. The teacher will ask the students randomly to say the name of the picture with her.
  11. The teacher will then say each word as she writes the words learnt from the video on the chalkboard or dry erase board, while highlighting the letter z from the other letters of the alphabet within the words, as follows: zoo, dizzy, pizza, bizarre, hazy, buzzing, zooms, zebra, prize, amazing, zigzags, zipped, fuzzy, zinnia, lazy, doze, sizes  
  12. The teacher will then ask the students to spell the words along with her as she points to each word.
  13. The teacher will randomly ask children to make the sound of the letter Z and to say the name of the picture and tell her if it begins with the letter Z.
  14. The teacher will choose students randomly to come up and write the letter Z in upper case and lower case form on the chalk or dry erase board.
  15. The teacher will then walk around the classroom to help the students to write upper case and lower case Z on their preprinted primary lined paper, while asking random students to make the sound of Z.
  16. The teacher will instruct the students to write letter Z in upper case and lower case form eight times on the provided preprinted primary line paper (Zz). 
  17. The teacher will then instruct the students to color the pictures that begin with the letter z on the teacher made worksheet.
  18. The teacher will distribute the puzzle worksheet and instruct students to circle all the letter Zs with a crayon.
  19. The teacher will review letter Z  and briefly introduce the next topic "Vowels". 

Modeling

 The teacher will draw primary lines on the chalkboard or dry erase board so that the children will see how their paper will look. The teacher will write the letter Z in the upper case and lower case form five times on the board. The students will pay close attention to the teacher writing the letter as to how she is holding the marker so that they can define their fine motor skills. 

While showing pictures of a zebra and a zoo, the teacher will say the name of the picture while enunciating the sound of letter Z. The teacher will ask the students randomly to say the name of the picture with her so that they will know how to say it.

The teacher will then say each word as she writes the words learnt from the video on the chalkboard or dry erase board, while highlighting the letter z from the other letters of the alphabet within the words, as follows: zoo, dizzy, pizza, bizarre, hazy, buzzing, zooms, zebra, prize, amazing,zigzags, zipped, fuzzy, zinnia, lazy, doze, sizes. The teacher will then ask the students to spell the words along with her as she points to each word. 

 

Check for understanding

 To keep track of the students learning progress, the teacher will perform a number of activities combing of oral questioning, writing and coloring activities.

  • Questioning: 

At the beginning of the lesson the teacher will ask the students if they can identify the letter that is being displayed around the classroom, If anyone can write the letter Z on the chalkboard or the dry erase board and if anyone know what sound the letter Z makes.

Before the test is distributed to the students, the teacher will randomly ask children to make the sound of letter Z and to say the name of the picture and tell her if it begins with the letter Z, in order to check for understanding. The teacher will also randomly choose students to come up and write the letter Z in upper case and lower case form on the chalk or dry erase board.

  • Circulating around the Classroom:

The teacher will walk around the classroom and help every student to write the letter Z in upper case and lower case. The teacher will also walk around the classroom, while asking random students to make the sound of letter Z.

  • Assigning and Collecting

The student will write the letter Z in upper case and lower case eight times on the prodvided primary lined paper.

On a teacher made worksheet the student will color four pictures that begin with the letter Z by saying the name of the picture.

The student will identify the letter Zs in the puzzle provided.

This is will be collected at the end of the lesson for grading and recording.

  • Conducting Periodic Reviews:

Throughout the lesson teacher will ask students to identify the letter Z, write the letter Z, or make the sound of letter Z in order to know if the students are able to retain the new information; so that the teacher will be able to know, if she should review what  she has already done or progress with the lesson.

  •  Administering Test:

 The students will be expected to properly form and write the letter Z in upper case and lower case at least 5 times out of 8 attempts on the provided primary lined paper, on a teacher made worksheet they will color at least three of four pictures that begin with the letter Z.

  • Reviewing Student Performance:

Through grading and recording the results of the indepedent practice, the teacher will know how the students are peforming and if they need a revision on the lesson. Daily reports of how the student is progressing will be sent home with the child; the teacher will also walk around while the students are preforming their independent task and let them know if they are doing a good job or what they need to revise.The teacher will review in detail if the student does not properly form at least five upper case and lower case letter Z on the primary lined paper, color at least three pictures that begin with the letter Z and circle or identify at least four letter Z in the puzzle worksheet.  

Guided practice

 The teacher will ask students to spell the words along with her as she points to each word. Children will randomly be asked to make the sound of Z. The teacher will also assist the children with saying the name of the picutres on the projector making sure that they enunciate the sound of Z in order to know if  the pictures start with the letter Z. The children will then come up to the chalk or dry erase board and write the letter Z in upper case and lower case form. The teacher will then walk around the classroom and help students to write upper case and lower case Z on their pre-printed primary lined paper.

Independent practice

 The student will do an instucted activity by the teacher, which entails them to draw, cut out and paste the letter Z  on constuction paper.The teacher will then instuct the students to write letter Z in upper case and lower case form eight times on the provided pre-printed primary lined paper. The teacher will also instruct the students to color the pictures that begin with the letter Z on teacher made worksheet. The students will then receive a puzzle worksheet on which they will be instructed to circle all the letter Zs with a crayon.

Closure

 At the end of the lesson the teacher will review letter Z  by asking questions reflecting on the lesson allowing the students to orally express what they have learnt and remind the students that this is the last letter in the alphabet and that the students will be moving on to the next topic which will are "Vowels" next class.
