Lesson 1

The students will be placed into groups of four.

Utilizing the resources provided within this project and/or conducting their own Internet search (please refer to the "Resource" and "Online Experts" sections), each group will come up with four, reputable, websites that support the use of animals in biochemical research and four, reputable, websites that oppose this practice. Record your findings in the "Student Collected Project Data" section.

Each group will review the information in favor and against the use of animals in research.  They will clarify questions and concerns that may arise by conducting further research and discussion.

The professor will select half of the groups to take the pro side and half of the groups to take the con side of the issue. (Please refer to the "Instructor" section for specific details on the debate and to the "Resource" section for more ideas)

Each group will prepare to defend their side in a debate.  Each group will select a debate team. The team should be composed of at least three speakers and up to two resource persons.

A debate will be conducted in the class between the two groups, pro and con.  The teacher will select students to act as judges, moderator, time keeper, team members, and any other role required for the debate.

Instructions for debate are provided in the "Instructor Area" section.

Make sure to record your findings in the "Student Collected Project Data" section.

Lesson 2

Once the debate has been conducted the results can be posted to the "Ethical Issues of the Use of Animals in Research" Forum.   The Forum may be accessed through the "Forum" section.

Take part in the Forum discussion and polls with other classes and/or campuses of your school, and/or other schools.
