Course Description:

This course provides the student opportunities to apply concepts of psychiatric nursing. Experiences in both inpatient and community settings will be provided focusing in the nurse’s role in meeting the needs of the client, family, and community. The students will be encouraged to actively participate in projects assisting clients in preventive and maintenance of mental health.

Karch, A., (2006) Focus on Nursing Pharmacology, 3rd Ed. Lippincott Williams & Wilkins.

You may use any other pharmacology book of your choice.

 

 

Dress code:

Students need to dress appropriately in street clothes for this rotation. T-shirts, jeans, shorts, tight pants, mini skirts, sleeveless blouses, open shoes, sandals or tennis shoes are NOT ALLOWED.  You must wear your picture I.D. or student ID tag with a clip only. Do not wear excessive jewelry like dangling earrings or gold chains around your neck.

Cell phones and pagers must be silence.

Attendance:

1.      Attendance is mandatory. In case of absence, course faculty will identify alternative assignments. Alternative assignments do not “excuse” student from a clinical attendance, and the absence will be noted on the clinical evaluation tool.

2.      Students are expected to prepare for clinical experiences by completing required assignments. 

3.      Clinical faculty and the nursing unit must be notified in advance of any absences.

 

Health/CPR requirements:

Please refer to School of Nursing Orientation Manual. The students must present documentation of health/ CPR, background check, and drug screening  requirements on the first clinical day.

 

 

 

Expectations of a clinical day:

1.      Students are expected to report to the clinical site on time for report.  Pre-conference is set aside at the beginning of the clinical day, and post-conference at the end of the day for various activities.

 

2.      Following pre-conference, the student will be expected to care for the patient/ patients receiving report from the primary nurse. The student is expected to initiate and participate in unit activities for a patient or groups of patients.

 

3.      Students are expected to care for all patients in a safe and effective manner.  The student who is unable to provide consistent, safe care may be asked to withdraw form the clinical environment and/or course.

4.      Students are responsible for practicing nursing skills required for this semester in the Nursing Skills Laboratory.

 

5.      Students are held accountable for all professional behaviors (see Clinical Evaluation Tool).

 

Required course assignments:         

 

1.      The students will complete two Interpersonal Process Recordings (IPR’s).      

One of these must meet minimal requirements as outlined in the IPR guidelines.

            2.   A medication teaching plan.

3.  Verbal report on community agency visit.

4.  Successful completion of:

a.       Pharmacology examination.

b.      Critical thinking examination.
