    EDUCATIONAL PHILOSOPHY

"Statement on Teaching and Research Interests"

The goal of education is to develop authentic individuals who
exercise freedom of choice, take responsibility for their actions,
solve social problems and create a better world. The philosophy
of my teaching also lies in these facts. The goal of my teaching
is to create successful independent and self-disciplined learners,
who could set challenges and solve problems. These individuals
should be able to develop inquisitive mind, apply critical thinking
skills, and take action also. The goal of any research is to solve
some real world social problems and create a better world. The
goal and philosophy of my research also lies in these facts.
I have a strong interest in and commitment to research in
mathematics, statistics, mathematical sciences, and math & stat
education. I have special interest in interdisciplinary and
collaborative research. I have research interests in the field of
Numerical Analysis, Functional Analysis, Topology,
Linear Algebra, Matrix Theory, Mathematical Modeling,
Special Functions, Statistics, History of Mathematics,
Curriculum Development, and
Mathematics Education.

    CURRENT PROJECTS

    INTERESTS

Dr. Shakil enjoys teaching, claiming that teaching is a fun,
and is a very fascinating and rewarding profession. He has
a strong  interest in and commitment to teaching undergraduate
(major/minor) and graduate level mathematics and statistics
courses, including  remedial, developmental, career, and
technical mathematics. He has special interest in the "Issues
in the Undergraduate Mathematics Education." He has also
interest in interdisciplinary and collaborative teaching and
research.

His  research interests lie
in the fields of mathematics and statistics,
mathematics and statistics education, distribution theory, probability,
numerical analysis, functional analysis, history of mathematics, and
curriculum development.
Dr. Shakil comes from Patna, a historical
and
magnificent city in India (the ancient name of Patna was Patliputra).
Patna was once the seat of great Mauryan empire, under the greatest Mauryan
emperor, Ashoka (286-231 BC).
Aryabhatta (476-520 A.D.), the
great mathematician and astronomer, who explained the causes of
solar and lunar eclipses, and discovered the rule for the solution of
simple intermediate equations, was born in Patliputra.
Prior to
coming to U.S.A., Dr. Shakil taught in India and Nigeria. He is a
Fellow and CStat of Royal Statistical Society (U.K.). He is also a
Member of American Mathematical Society, American
Statistical Association, International Linear Algebra Society,
Maplesoft.com,
Research Group in Mathematical Inequalities
and Applications (Australia), Florida International
University Alumni Association, a Life Member
of Bihar Mathematical Society (India), and a Registered Graduate of
Patna University, to mention a few. He has a number of research publications to his credit.
He enjoys reading (biographies, travelogue, interview,
etc.), history, philosophy, geography, music, sports, traveling,
 movies, and meeting people.
