At the beginning of every semester, I ask my Level 6 Reading students if they like to read.   This year my blood ran cold (really!) when 75% of the class said, "No!"  Reading is one of my passions, so I really have trouble understanding that someone just doesn't like to read.  There's little time to spare in our 50-minute classes, and of course, there's the reading section of the CPT to prepare for.  Still, there was no way that I was going to accept defeat easily.  Every semester my EAP 1620 class reads at least one book together as a class.  This year I decided to give Tuesdays with Morrie a try.  I have to admit that I had my doubts.  “Is it too sentimental?  Will younger students relate to it?”  And then there was Oscar.  A higher power (that would be one of our advisors) let me know that I really needed to accept "just one more student" into our learning community.  Little did I know that Oscar would be my secret ally in this battle to convince the class that reading is a pleasure, not a boring necessity.

The 1st Friday - Oscar looked up more quotations from Mitch Albom, the author.  Oscar was a teacher in his country, and he shares my passion for reading.  Oscar even came up with some critical thinking questions to go along with our discussion.  His enthusiasm adds to mine.  Then, we're joined by about 6 ladies.  Well, we're having a really good time with this.  Maybe it will be contagious.

The 2nd Friday - Those three guys in the back were actually sitting up and listening as we discussed the flashbacks Mitch describes.  Not only are the students participating, all of the students can identify examples of  figurative language.

The 3rd Friday - It's working!  The same students that sometimes have a glazed look at 8:00 a.m. are actually sharing their personal experiences and feelings about this book!  “Do you like this book?”  I ask them.  “Yes!”   They all agree emphatically.  “It's a great book.”   “Who would have thought?”  I say to myself.

The 7th Friday - Today we talked about why Morrie thinks that men should cry and why Mitch tries to hide his feelings.  Even that tough guy who laughs and rolls his eyes about everything sentimental shared why he doesn't cry.  “Now,” I ask them, “can you find an example of a simile in this chapter?”  “Sure.  Actually there are several.”  “What's the tone of the author?”  “Sentimental, nostalgic, tender.”

Ah…the magic of a good book.  Good, authentic material will make a difference every time.
