It is hard to underestimate the impact and importance of technology on the modern world. In fact, without technology, it would not even be called modern. Technology has been an ongoing revolution that has occurred in three stages. The first stage was the industrial revolution, the second was the computer revolution, and the current revolution is the medical science revolution.
First, the industrial revolution was characterized by mechanical power. Originally, steam was harnessed to make machines go, and this force was applied to factories, trains, and steam ships. With the advent of industrial power, the world was transformed. Rail lines were laid, canals were cut, the production of goods and services increased enormously.
The next aspect of technology that transformed the world was computer science. There was a long line of inventions leading up to the computer. Some of these innovations included the telegraph, phonograph, and telephone. Step by step, the digital age came to be.
The final technological revolution is the current one. The watershed event was probably mapping the human genome and determining all of its sequences. The biological sciences will probably have the most impact because they will profoundly affect the way we reproduce and the length and quality of human life.
In conclusion, there have been three broad technological revolutions. These revolutions involved the machine, the computer, and biology.
