My Background and Interests
Marie O. Etienne, PhD (Hon) Min., DNP, APRN, FNP, PNP, GNP, PLNC is a tenured full professor of Nursing at Miami Dade College (MDC) Benjamín Léon School of Nursing. Dr. Etienne entered the realm of academics at Miami Dade College since 1997. Her experience includes pediatrics, geriatrics, family practice, community health nursing, leadership and course developer of online teaching for the RN-BSN program at the College. She is a certified Professional Legal Nurse Consultant. She earned the Doctor of Nursing Practice degree from University of Miami in 2010. Dr. Etienne serves as consultant in Curriculum Development and is a member of the Professional Development Advisory Board Member of Albizu University for a HRSA Grant on Inter-Professional Integrated Care Training for Healthier Communities since 2017. In May 2017, Dr. Etienne was bestowed an Honorary Doctor of Philosophy in Ministry by the South Florida Theological Seminary of South Florida for her outstanding ministries in the nursing profession and for her humanitarian work.
Dr. Etienne is the 2007 recipient of the MDC Stanley G. Tate and Family Endowed Teaching Chair for Excellence in Academia. She serves a the Chair for Faculty Affairs Committee of MDC BLSON. She is a Co-Lead for the Florida Action Coalition Diversity Council since 2014. She received many distinguished awards locally, nationally, and internationally including the Trailblazer Award of the National Black Nurses Association; in April 2011, HANA’s Wall of Fame” for being a transformational leader, a passionate servant, an inspiring achiever, a dedicated role model, excellent nurse educator, and outstanding member; 2012 FNA Advanced Practice Nurse Award; Top 25 Nursing Professors in Florida in Online Schools; recipient of the Beacon of Hope and Achievement Award by the Consulate General of Haiti in Miami. One out of 32 recipients worldwide; Dr. Etienne was among Five (5) Recipients from the United States to receive the 2013 Florence Nightingale Medal by the International Red Cross; the 2014 Top Educators in Miami by Legacy Magazine; ABNF Excellence in Community Service & Engagement Award 2018. Dr. Etienne serves as the first President of HANA International (HANA-I), Past President of HANA Florida (2005-2007), and past Chairwoman of the Haitian American Professionals Coalition. Dr. Etienne’s ultimate goal is to inspire others to be social innovators, leaders and changemakers in society.
