My Background and Interests
Dr. William Murphy earned his Ph.D. in Human Communication Studies from the University of Denver. A rhetorician by training, Dr. Murphy wrote his dissertation about the rhetoric of solidarity in the American Labor Movement, drawing conceptual inspiration from scholars Kenneth Burke, Michael Calvin McGee, Ronald Greene, and Dana Cloud, to name a few. He co-authored an article with Dr. Christina Foust examining the apocalyptic framing of discourse related to global climate change. The article was published in the journal Environmental Communication.
In college, Dr. Murphy competed in Parliamentary-format debate. He placed at the NPDA national championship tournament all four years of college. He has coached students in both high school and collegiate speech and debate, with one student winning a high school state championship under his tutelage and several college students winning FCSAA State Championships, qualifying for the NIET championship tournament and the Interstate Oratorical Society tournament, as well as placing at the Phi Rho Pi National Championship tournament.
Dr. Murphy has taught courses in Public Speaking, Interpersonal Communication, Intercultural Communication, Communication and Popular Culture, Technical Discourses, Business and Professional Speaking, Conflict Resolution, Decision-making, Argumentation, and Debate. He has been teaching since 2004.
