FROM THE EDITOR.
Welcome to the third edition of Connections, the online newsletter from the ESL & Foreign Language Department of the Kendall Campus.

Connections offers, as usual, great articles from the faculty and staff of the Kendall Campus.  Noteworthy in this edition is Judith García's contribution.  She has created a PowerPoint narration about the Kendall Campus ESL/FL Department, its initiatives and projects.  Don't miss it.

A new section, the Poetry Forum, has been inaugurated with three striking poems about the sea, sand and boats.  One of the poems, "A Day at South Point", by Lynda Smith Pinto-Torres, from the Kendall Campus, is an impressionistic tableau of a contemporary day at the beach.  "Arena y sal", a moving poem by Ofelia Martín Hudson, from the Interamerican Campus, extracted from her 2001 poetry book Poemas de sal y arena, seems, by sheer coincidence, to pick up where the first poem leaves off.  Both poems show how the beautiful crystal salty waters of the ocean can be a death trap to many.  Finally, Someone Else, by Hernando Marín, from the Hialeah Center, ties his Hispanic heritage to the sea and the waves.

The Outstanding ESL & Foreign Language Student of the Kendall Campus for 2004 have been selected.  The Award Ceremony will take place April 14, in room 6120.  You are all invited to attend.

As the editor of this bimonthly publication, I encourage you to browse through the menu listed on the left.  Please read Kathy Biache's article asking all of us to help curtail student paper waste in our lab.

Congratulations to all who presented workshops during Professional Development Day 2004.  This year we had an unprecedented number of presenters.  This speaks highly of our ESL/FL Department, and it is a testimony to the leadership of its chairperson, Judith García.

Keep informed about the latest developments in the ESL/FL Departments of MDC by reading Connections !!!

I sincerely thank everyone whose contributions made this newsletter possible, and I invite faculty and staff from all campuses of MDC to contribute.

Since I will be on leave this summer, the next issue of Connections will be published in September 2004.
