New Grant: Is ESL Going Math?

United Nations Day at the Kendall Campus

From the Editor
Welcome to the fourth edition of Connections, the online newsletter from the ESL & Foreign Language Department of the Kendall Campus.

Connections  brings to you great articles and innovative ideas from the ESL faculty and staff from all campuses of Miami Dade College.

Our Featured Article for this issue is by The Miami Herald columnist Andrés Oppenheimer.   His report on the state of the English Language in Asia versus Latin America is revealing.  Another thought-provoking piece is John Merrow's article on grade inflation in colleges and universities. Don't miss it!

Glenna Veiga's "Dear Glenna" column has been transformed into the "Readers' Forum." This is a wonderful avenue to share your reading adventures with the rest of the Faculty.  What are you currently reading that is exciting?  Would you recommend it to others? Please send your contribution for this column directly to Glenna Veiga.

Don't miss the articles on the Fulbright Gateway Orientation, sponsored by the Wolfson Campus of Miami Dade College.  This event brought Fulbright scholarship recipients from all over the world to MDC this past August.

At the Kendall Campus, we had UN DAY, a successful all day event sponsored by the ESL Department.  The keynote speaker was Peter Burleigh, Ambassador in Residence and Distinguished Visiting Professor at the University of Miami.

"The Lunacy of the English Language," sent to Prof. Margarita Orro by one of her students, is a lot of fun to read.  Feel free to use it in your ESL classes!

From now on, Connections  will be published once a semester.  As the editor, I encourage you to browse through the menu listed on the left.  You will keep informed about the latest developments in the ESL/FL Departments of MDC.

I sincerely thank everyone whose contributions made this newsletter possible,

The next issue of Connections will be published in March of 2005.  Please send your contributions to Rene.Izquierdo@mdc.edu
