Reading Quantitatively by Marta Bret Kendall
This summer Dr. Suzanne Austin and I participated in the Mathematics Across the Curriculum Summer Institute (QEP Project MIND). We had a lot of fun creating a module integrating math into the ESL Reading 4 curriculum. It was inspiring to feel the enthusiasm of the other professors, who came from around the United States, working together to apply mathematics to different academic subjects. The tranquility of the Sleeping Lady Resort, the schedule that offered lectures and workshops while leaving enough time to work on projects, and the facilities open around the clock all collaborated to induce a spirit of reflection and production. All teams created posters of their projects at the closing meeting and, in the photo below, you can see Suzanne and me hard at work on ours. Suzanne will be visiting my class to apply the mathematics of Body Mass Indexing to a reading about health. We will be working on understanding word problems with a theme of health, and our project will be implemented in the Spring semester. This October 26, Suzanne and I hope to have our students participate in United Nations Day by responding to, collecting, and analyzing a survey of students to determine, according to country of origin, which students are the "happiest." We would like to thank MDC and Edmonds Community College for giving us this opportunity for interdisciplinary collaboration in order to expand our students' knowledge and perspectives. |
