Catalog Course Description/Objectives

The course will trace the progress of the legends surrounding King Arthur from medieval to contemporary poetry and prose, with primary focus on literary texts and supplementary investigation of Arthurian themes in art, film, and music.
Prerequisite: ENC 1101

Note: Do not buy book editions other than the ones listed below. Other editions will cause problems for you in class and make more work for you in writing the analytical paper.

  1.  Chretien de Troyes: Lancelot, or the Knight of the Cart, Translator: Ruth Cline (University of Georgia Press) 

  2.  Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, Translator: Marie Borroff (Norton)

  3.  Sir Thomas Malory: Le Morte Darthur, Editor: Helen Cooper (Oxford)

  4.  Mary Stewart: The Wicked Day (Eos)

  5.  Books will be supplemented with handouts and films

Requirements

 Assignments:

  • Attendance and participation - 10% and may also convince me to throw in an extra point or two if your course grade is on the borderline at the end of the term

  • 6 discussion board assignments in Angel - 30% of the grade for the course

  • A 3-4 full page analytical paper - 60% of the grade for the course

Students should:

  • Finish reading assignments before coming to class on the day they are due 

  • Bring books to class

  • Follow the Ground Rules

  • Merlin, the Multi-Element Radio-Linked Interferometer Network, is an array of six observing stations that work together to form a powerful radio telescope comparable in strength to the Hubble Space Telescope. Merlin is a United Kingdom National Facility operated by the University of Manchester for the Particle Physics and Astronomy Research Council. Ok! So it's not pop culture ~ it's science!
